The Wavebob is a floating and self-reacting device that may be deployed in large arrays in deep waters 5-10km offshore. The device is an oscillating point absorber, which absorbs most of its energy when the natural period of oscillation is in tune with the incident waves. The breakthrough technology is based on several innovations – an ability to recover power from large waves and to tune the buoy to varying sea-states. Each device is typically rated at over 1MW and will generate over a 20 year life. The offshore wave energy converter is currently deployed in sub scalar test mode in Spiddal near Galway, Ireland. B9 Energy is involved with parallel R&D programmes focused on identifying and addressing design issues important to practical realization of the device, including the effect of operation & maintenance costs.
